We often receive carpets that have been damaged.
Water damage can be caused by flooding, whether a bad rainstorm or a geyser burst. Water damage to handmade carpets is significant as the finest carpets use handmade vegetable dyes, and when these get diluted, they can bleed into each other.
We also receive stained and soiled rugs, when “life” happens (food, red wine, pet urine).
Arian is an expert in repair and restoration of all handmade carpets. As a Persian national from a carpet-dealing family, he cut his teeth on understanding the specialist treatment of these valuable works of art.
Have a look at this piece, recently brought into Persian Panache for emergency care.
The owner had spilled something very sticky onto it, and the stain was matted and thick, and had also caused the colours to fade and bleed.
Arian assessed the carpet (as he’s often required to by insurance companies when a claim has been lodged). He found that the rug could indeed be restored; that the damage was not irreparable.
He applied a paste to the stain, to loosen it. This imported product contains chemicals that cause the colours to constrict and “bounce back”. He then washed the entire rug in the traditional manner: a gentle Persian handwash and sun-dry.
There remained a slight fade, which he was able to remedy with carpet inks and the precision of a surgeon’s hand.
Carpets are often family heirlooms, or souvenirs of special times, trips, and people.
Arian understands this, and does his utmost to restore to former glory, where possible.
If you have a damaged carpet, get in touch, and let Arian assess. He will be able to advise on the best way forward. Sometimes repair is unrealistic, and he can quote on replacements and source as similar an item as possible (much as you will never, ever find two identical handmade rugs, which is their charm).
